How to Choose the Right PA System for Your Event

Most bad event sound has nothing to do with brand. It comes from a system that was sized for a different room, a different crowd or a different job. Work through these questions first and the equipment list almost writes itself.

1. Start with the audience and the space

A speech at a 100-seat hall and a live band at an open-air function need very different systems. Note the audience size, whether the event is indoors or outdoors, and whether the main job is speech, music or both. Open-air events need considerably more power than indoor ones because there are no walls to help.

2. Match power to speakers

Amplifier power and speaker ratings must agree. Check each speaker’s impedance (usually 4 or 8 ohms) and its power handling, then choose an amplifier that delivers a little more than the speaker’s continuous rating without exceeding what the speaker can take. Under-powered systems clip and damage speakers more often than powerful ones do.

3. Don’t forget the low end

Full-range cabinets struggle with deep bass. For music events, add stage subwoofers on their own amplifier channel so the low frequencies are handled properly and the mid-range stays clean.

4. Choose the right mixer

Count every source you need to mix: vocals, instruments, playback. Buy a mixer with more channels than you need today, plus enough auxiliary sends for stage monitors. A powered mixer is a good all-in-one choice for smaller rooms; larger rigs usually separate the mixer and amplifiers.

5. Plan microphones and cabling

Wireless microphones give performers freedom, but they need clear channels and fresh batteries. Always carry spare cables, stands and a backup microphone.
